Skills and Employment

Over its lifetime the City Deal is set to create 29,000 new jobs across the Region, in addition to 15,000 temporary jobs during the construction period and it will support 5,500 unemployed people back into work.

Regional employment challenges have been supported through three new labour market projects, all of which are complete.

Working Matters

Working Matters helped thousands of residents in receipt of health-related benefits – some of those furthest away from the jobs market – to begin the journey into long-term employment. On its conclusion at the end of March 2019, it had engaged with over 3,300 unemployed people.

Youth Gateway

An integrated employment programme for young people (aged 16 – 24), completed substantially ahead of target, with over 8,000 of the Region’s young people supported into employment.

In Work Progression

The In Work Progression pilot, supporting the training and development of staff in the Care sector and sector resilience, completed at the end of December 2018. The pilot was an example of Inclusive Growth in practice, with interventions benefiting the company as well as individuals.

Evaluation exercises on all three projects will provide learning for future schemes Region-wide.
