Empowering independence through 5G technology
Location: Glasgow City Region
The Smart Support for Spinal Injuries project is transforming lives with 5G-enabled smart home technologies. Funded by the £600,000 5G Glasgow City Region (GCR) Smart and Connected Social Places Innovation Fund, this innovative initiative promotes independence, enhances well-being, and creates a replicable model for digitally enabled care across Scotland.
The Challenge
Each year, around 400 people in Scotland experience spinal cord injury, facing significant challenges related to mobility, mental health, and access to essential services. Post-discharge, individuals often struggle with independence due to limited support systems and physical barriers within their homes.
The Innovation
The Smart Support for Spinal Injuries project leverages 5G connectivity to create smart home environments tailored to the unique needs of individuals with spinal cord injuries. Through assistive technologies such as smart locks, Ring Doorbells, Alexa devices, and advanced monitoring systems, the project empowers participants to regain control over their daily lives.
- 5G-Enabled Smart Homes: Tailored installations to support mobility, safety, and independence.
- Assistive Technology Training: Workshops led by the Assistive Technology Champion and tech experts to build digital skills.
This project is a collaborative effort between key organisations:
- Spinal Injuries Scotland (SIS): Project management and participant support.
- Vodafone: Technical expertise, device provision, and 5G infrastructure.
- NHS Scotland Healthcare Professionals and Support Specialists: Supporting our Assistive Technology Champion in delivering tailored solutions and guidance.
- Glasgow City Council: Support with home adaptations and equipment installation.
- 12 Smart Homes: Tailored environments supporting post-discharge independence.
- Enhanced Well-Being: Participants report improved feelings of security, confidence, and autonomy.
- Increased Connectivity: Improved access to healthcare services and social support networks.
- Positive Stakeholder Feedback: Participants highlight the transformative role of smart technologies in their daily lives.
The project aims to become a local centre to showcase independent living to other professionals across Scotland, integrating smart home technologies into mainstream rehabilitation programs.
Key results from the project will be shared at the Innovation Showcase Event on the 13 March 2025 in Glasgow. Find out more and register to attend.
