Informing better management and care of asthma and COPD through advanced air quality monitoring.
Location: Glasgow, Scotland
Nooku’s pilot project leverages advanced air quality monitoring and AI-powered insights to improve the management of respiratory diseases including asthma and COPD among vulnerable groups. Funded through the £600,000 5G Glasgow City Region (GCR) Smart and Connected Social Places Innovation Fund, the initiative empowers individuals and healthcare providers, aiming to reduce hospital admissions by 15% and enhance health outcomes.
The Challenge
Lung conditions are a leading cause of death in the UK, with Glasgow experiencing some of the highest rates of asthma and COPD due to urban pollution, historic housing stock, and high smoking rates. With 90% of homes exceeding WHO pollution limits, there is an urgent need for innovative solutions to manage respiratory health.
The Innovation
The Innovation Fund project involves supplying 30 pilot households – 15 families with children with asthma, and 15 homes with older adults living with COPD – with indoor air quality monitors which provide information about the air quality in their homes. It also involves using insights from these monitors to provide education and engagement to participants, as well as engaging with medical professionals to provide more informed and evidence-based care.
- Technology Used: IoT sensors, AI-powered reporting, and real-time data integration.
- Collaborators: Glasgow City Council, University of Strathclyde, STAC, and healthcare teams.
- Impact Goal: Reduction in hospital admissions and improved self-management of respiratory conditions.
- 30 IoT Sensors: Installed in homes to monitor indoor air quality.
- AI-Powered App: Simplifies data into actionable insights and provides alerts for users.
- Healthcare Integration: Ensures data-driven care plans for asthma and COPD patients.
The project’s success will inform broader public health strategies and promote proactive respiratory care. Nooku is already exploring partnerships with housing associations and policymakers to expand the initiative’s reach.
Key results from the project will be shared at the Innovation Showcase Event on the 13 March 2025 in Glasgow. Find out more and register to attend.
