Transforming healthcare with 5G-enabled remote monitoring

The I-FIVE project is revolutionising remote patient monitoring through cutting-edge 5G connectivity. Funded by the £600,000 5G Glasgow City Region (GCR) Smart and Connected Social Places Innovation Fund, this initiative improves healthcare access, reduces hospital admissions, and empowers patients to manage chronic conditions from the comfort of their homes.

The Challenge

Inverclyde faces significant health challenges due to high levels of deprivation and an ageing population. Chronic illnesses such as COPD, heart disease, and diabetes strain healthcare services, while limited access to GP appointments and hospital care exacerbates the problem.

The Innovation

The I-FIVE (Inverclyde Five-G Infrastructure for Virtual-care Enhancement) project leverages 5G technology to enhance remote patient monitoring. By deploying 5G-enabled tablets and DOC@HOME remote monitoring devices, the project supports proactive care, enabling earlier interventions and reducing unnecessary hospital visits.

  • 5G-Enabled Remote Monitoring: Real-time tracking of vital signs, enhancing patient care.
  • Virtual Consultations: Reducing the need for in-person visits while maintaining strong patient-clinician connections.
  • Self-Management Tools: Empowering patients with educational resources to manage chronic conditions effectively.

This project is a collaborative effort involving key healthcare and technology leaders:
  • Docobo Ltd: Providing the DOC@HOME platform, devices, and project management support.
  • Inverclyde HSCP: Offering clinical expertise, patient triage, and operational support.
  • Graphnet Health: Ensuring seamless data integration and regulatory compliance.

  • Reduction in Hospital Visits: Fewer A&E admissions and ambulance callouts.
  • Improved Patient Empowerment: Increased confidence in self-managing health conditions.
  • Connectivity Performance: Reliable, stable 5G-enabled devices for uninterrupted care.
  • High Patient Satisfaction: Positive feedback from both patients and healthcare providers.

Key results from the project will be shared at the Innovation Showcase Event on the 13 March 2025 in Glasgow. Find out more and register to attend.
