Inverclyde
Scotland’s marine leisure capital
Waiting to be discovered on the banks of the Clyde, Inverclyde is Scotland’s marine leisure capital.
One of Scotland’s smallest areas but with the warmest welcome, Inverclyde sits at the mouth of the River Clyde. Inverclyde is made up of three thriving towns; Port Glasgow, Greenock and Gourock and the villages of Kilmacolm and Quarrier’s Village to the East and Inverkip and Wemyss Bay to the West.
The area has a history and heritage rich in shipbuilding and seafaring dating back to the 1500’s which has left its mark throughout the Region. These days, it offers a broad range of sports and leisure facilities, both indoors and outdoors, a great variety of arts and culture activities and wide-open spaces to enjoy and explore.
There are plenty of outdoor pursuits and activities to get involved in. There are six golf courses alone in the area with outstanding views of the river. Wild swimming, sailing, rowing and 2 marinas with yachting facilities offer on the water activities. Throughout the area there are wide range of sporting facilities including tennis, lawn bowls, rugby and football. Indoor activities are also in abundance with a range of leisure and sports centres,
Our outdoor heated pool at Gourock offers a truly unique outdoor swimming experience overlooking the firth of Clyde to the Argyll hills. Two marinas and sailing clubs, add to Scotland’s largest cruise ship visitor location at Greenock ocean terminal to cement our place at the undoubted marine leisure capital in the country.
City Deal Projects
Inverclyde has three infrastructure projects totalling £26.75 million investment.
Greenock Ocean Terminal
The cruise market in Scotland has grown over recent years with Greenock becoming the first port in the country to break through the 100,000 passenger barrier. As part of the City Deal, Inverclyde Council and Peel Ports are building expansion of the quayside and delivery of a new visitor centre to further expand Greenock as the cruise ship capital of Scotland. The new cruise visitor centre project will include additional visitor opportunities with a new gallery and arts space in partnership with the George Wyllie Foundation and a new restaurant.
Inverkip
Inverkip is a joint infrastructure and development project by Inverclyde Council and Scottish Power which addresses the restricted network and junction capacity on the A78 trunk road at four locations in and around Inverkip. The project will release investment and secure the development of a major 20 hectare brownfield site identified in the Local Development Plan particularly around the former Inverkip Power Station site to create in excess of 600 houses and 6,000 sq m of commercial retail space. The anticipated cost of the public works is £3.25m with additional Private Sector investment expected.
Inchgreen
Inchgreen is a partnership project between Inverclyde Council and Peel Ports. It seeks to promote, make market ready and secure key sector investment in the site at Inchgreen in Greenock. It involves the redevelopment of a brownfield site, development of underutilised quay assets and the Inchgreen dry dock to offer a dedicated on shore marine hub.
