Electric Vehicle Charging

The Glasgow City Region Electric Vehicle (EV) and Charging Infrastructure Programme is focused on expanding the Region’s EV charging network to support the transition to electric vehicles.

With the Scottish Government set to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030, accelerating the roll-out of reliable, accessible charging infrastructure is essential to enable a smooth and inclusive transition.

In December 2025, the Region commenced a procurement exercise to appoint a private sector Charge Point Operator for a 20-year period. The appointed operator will install a minimum of 3,000 new charge points across the City Region.

This follows a comprehensive study that assessed current and future demand, network requirements and delivery options, and forms part of a wider programme to support net zero ambitions and address the climate emergency.

The expansion of the EV charging network will be primarily delivered through private sector investment. Transport Scotland has provided £3.6 million in grant funding to support the programme, which will help ensure the equitable deployment of new charge points in communities across Glasgow City Region.
